Pikes Peak CSI Members and Guests, please join us Tuesday, February 17 for a presentation by Keith Lunsford/Powers Products titled Protection of Buildings Wildland Urban Interface.  

Americans need to co-exist with wildfires.  In 2023, over 3,000 buildings were lost to wildfire in Colorado alone.  Ember and wildlife protection can increase structure retention in buildings where we live and work by up to 80%.  This presentation will review the protective technology available and highlight general safety measures to protect and prevent wildland fire loss in residential and public buildings.

Learning objectives for this presentation are:

Review various ways in which wildfires can attack structures.

Discuss fundamental best practices for protecting against structure loss due to wildfire.

Identify the most vulnerable points of a structure when exposed to wildfire.

Explore how specially designed mesh, shutters, fire-rated doors, and windows are engineered to withstand extreme temperatures and intense heat accompanying fires.

With more than three decades of experience in the specialty door industry, Keith Lunsford brings unmatched expertise and dedication to his role as Director of Fire + Smoke Separation at Powers Products. Since joining the company in 2012, Keith has become a trusted resource to architects, contractors, and building owners seeking code-compliant, high-performance life safety solutions. His background spans every aspect of the door industry—from field installation to ownership—giving him a comprehensive understanding of how design intent, safety, and functionality come together.

Keith specializes in helping design teams address complex life-safety challenges early in the design process. His consultative approach often uncovers ways to simplify systems and save costs without compromising performance. One standout example: during Colorado Mesa University’s library expansion, Keith worked with the design team to integrate fire and smoke curtains around the atrium, eliminating the need for an aging smoke evacuation system and saving more than $100,000. His deep knowledge and early involvement continue to help clients streamline design and avoid rework.

An active member of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE), Keith stays at the forefront of evolving fire and smoke safety codes, ensuring his clients benefit from the most current knowledge and solutions. Outside of work, he enjoys time with his wife and son—often tinkering in the garage or tackling projects around the house. His curiosity and hands-on nature reflect the same problem-solving mindset he brings to every Powers project.
